Planeet Zee: 20 students on board

On 25 November 2014, our research team participated in the outreach event “Planeet Zee” organized by the VLIZ (Flanders Marine Institute). Twenty high school students (College O.-L.-V.-ten-Doorn, Eeklo, Belgium) had the chance to participate in a sampling campaign on board the research vessel Simon Stevin with 3 of our researchers. We visited Station 130 in the Belgian Coastal Zone, which is one of our regular monitoring stations for electrogenic cable bacteria. After sediment core sampling, the students analyzed the sediment geochemistry and searched for cable bacteria under the microscope (and with success!). The students were surely enthusiastic, and maybe one day, they become part of the new generation of marine scientists!
